Unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances, causes more than 200 diseases – ranging from diarrhoea to cancers. When buying food at the market or store, check the labels or the actual produce to ensure it is safe to eat. If you are preparing food, make sure you follow the Five Keys to Safer Food: (1) Keep clean (2) Separate raw and cooked (3) Cook thoroughly (4) Keep food at safe temperatures (5) Use safe water and raw materials.

The way you prepare your food can drastically change its effects on your health. Grilling, broiling, frying, and deep-frying are all popular methods of preparing meat and fish. Healthier cooking methods include: baking, broiling, poaching, pressure cooking, simmering, slow cooking and stewing. These methods don’t promote the formation of these harmful compounds and may make your food healthier. Although you can still enjoy the occasional grilled or deep-fried dish, it’s best to use those methods sparingly.
The decline in the effectiveness of Covaxin, India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, from 77.8 per cent to 50 per cent during a Delta-driven case surge in April and May this year is neither bad nor surprising, say scientists. The differing figures led to some concern, particularly among those who had received Covaxin, but several scientists allayed the misgivings, pointing to the potency of the Delta strain, the intensity of the second Covid wave in India and the level of exposure among healthcare workers. – FE Health
